Development of Waterproof Rigid Core Vinyl Flooring
Aug 12, 2020

Focusing on waterproof rigid core vinyl flooring, a rising star in the resilient flooring industry, this is an innovative flooring that is developing so fast that we can't call it by a unified name. It was originally called the WPC floor, which was made of wood polymer composite (without waterproof core), but with the development of products with different structures and materials, people gradually began to call it SPC floor with hardcore. But no matter what you call it, this rigid multi-layer waterproof resilient floor has been the hottest product in the industry for the past few years

The rapid development of a new waterproof rigid core vinyl flooring structure shows that there is no need to worry about the aging and delisting of products. In view of the current market situation, rigid SPC flooring will not only continue to grow but also become an innovative platform for continuous development. With its continuous innovation and evolution, it is likely to cross-border derive other new categories of hard surface flooring.

Evolution history of waterproof rigid core vinyl flooring

Fundamentally speaking, a rigid SPC floor is the combination of hardness characteristics of common laminated flooring and the waterproof performance of the SPC floor, so as to create new products beyond these two categories. Rigid SPC flooring has gained market share from other hard flooring categories due to its easy installation and effective solution to the problems of uneven or unqualified underfloors.

Traditional SPC flooring is a layered product with a base of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is made of the high content of limestone and a transparent wear-resistant protective layer - a more elastic PVC printed film surface layer. SPC flooring usually has a support system to maintain structural balance, and other interior layers can be included to enhance performance, such as adding fiberglass to enhance dimensional stability.

Now, most iterative new products no longer use sawdust. In many cases, the focus of transformation and upgrading is on the kernel of traditional SPC products. A successful strategy is to obtain sufficient core hardness by eliminating plasticizers and increasing the proportion of calcium carbonate (limestone). The conventional use of foaming agents to treat foamed PVC cores is a very popular solution to obtain sufficient hardness and dimensional stability without adding too much weight to the product. Products with a higher degree of foaming, or those with thicker foam cores, provide more cushioning and act as sound barriers. However, the dent resistance of this kind of products is poor, because the lack of plasticizer makes the floor material lose the resilience, so it is easy to produce permanent indentation under heavy load. On the other hand, solid or foam floor products have sufficient dent resistance but can not provide sufficient comfort. At this time, as an additional component, the cushion can play a key role in these super rigid products.
